Discover the stages of a traditional hammam, from the first warmth to the moment of rest, explained simply so you can approach your first session with confidence. The hammam has been part of Moroccan life for centuries. Yet for anyone who has never stepped into a steam room, the ritual can seem mysterious: what exactly happens, in what order, and what do you have to do yourself? Here is how a traditional hammam unfolds, step by step, as we practise it at Yanis Prestige Spa in Casablanca.

1. Arrival: slowing down before you begin

A good hammam begins before the steam. You are welcomed, given a bathrobe and towels, and shown to a relaxation room where you can leave your belongings. This time is not a formality: it lets body and mind leave the pace of the city behind. Use it to mention any skin sensitivity or particular condition.

2. The heat: preparing skin and muscles

In the hammam room, the steam gradually envelops the body. The heat relaxes the muscles, opens the pores and prepares the skin for exfoliation. There is nothing to do except breathe and let it come. This phase usually lasts from a few minutes to around ten minutes, depending on how well you tolerate heat.

3. Black soap: the foundation of the ritual

Black soap, or beldi, is a plant-based paste made from olives. Applied to damp skin, it softens the outer layer and makes the scrub that follows easier. It is left to work for a few minutes in the heat before being rinsed off.

4. The scrub: the heart of the hammam

This is the most distinctive stage. Lying on the marble table, you are scrubbed with an exfoliating glove from neck to feet. Dead skin visibly comes away: this is normal, and even a sign that the heat and black soap have done their work. The pressure is adjusted to your skin; do not hesitate to say if it feels too strong.

5. Savonnage and rinsing

After the scrub, the body is washed with soap and then rinsed generously with warm water. Some rituals add a clay mask (rhassoul) to the body or hair: this natural earth purifies and leaves the skin soft.

6. Rest: prolonging the feeling

You do not rush out of a hammam. A moment of rest, a drink, a few minutes lying down allow the body to settle and the feeling of lightness to set in. It is also the ideal moment for a massage: the heat has prepared the muscles, so the treatment reaches deeper.

How should you prepare?

  • Avoid a heavy meal in the two hours beforehand.
  • Drink water before and after: the heat makes you sweat.
  • Remove jewellery and contact lenses if the steam bothers you.
  • Tell us about any sensitivity, pregnancy or medical condition when you arrive.
  • Allow time: a hammam is to be savoured, not rushed.
